High School Academic Eligibility Policy

Procedure

Any student in grades 9-12 who participates in an extracurricular activity that meets on a regular basis (at least bi-monthly) will have his/her academic record reviewed every five weeks. Students who are failing (for purposes of this policy, failure is defined as having received a grade of F on a Report Card or Progress Report) two or more subjects will be placed on Academic Probation for five weeks. During that period, students must attend three of four after school study halls per week. (There will be no study hall scheduled for Fridays). Students may still participate in extracurricular activities during this period as long as they attend the required sessions.

Academic Eligibility Committee

The Academic Eligibility Committee will meet every five weeks or at the initiation of an extracurricular activity to review the academic record of those students identified as participating in extracurricular activities.

The Academic Eligibility Committee shall consist of the following personnel:

  • Building Administrator

  • Guidance Counselor

  • Athletic Director

  • Faculty Representative

Once a student is determined to have failed two or more subjects, the student, the parents, and the coach/advisor will be notified.

Coach/Advisor

Every coach or advisor of an extracurricular activity will provide a roster to the
Eligibility Committee as soon as possible prior to the start of the activity. The Eligibility Committee must approve any additions to rosters before a student is eligible to participate.

Academic Probation

Students placed on Academic Probation are responsible for attending three of four after school study hall periods per week. It is the student’s responsibility to attend these sessions and be prepared to work during these sessions. Students who come unprepared or who do not actively participate will not be given credit for attending. Students who arrive late for study hall will be admitted but will not receive credit for the day.

  • Students will attend three sessions per week for a 4 or 5-day week schedule.

  • If the week is modified for any reason (holiday, weather, etc.), students will attend as follows: For weeks where there are three days of school, a student must attend twice. For weeks where there are two days of school, a student must attend once.

1 Day

  • The first time a student does not attend the required amount of study halls in a week; he/she will immediately be assigned detention. A notice will be sent to parents and coach/advisors.

Academic Ineligibility

The second time a student does not attend the required amount of Study Halls in a week; he/she will become Academically Ineligible to participate in his/her designated
extracurricular activity until the next review period. A letter will be sent to parents and
coaches/advisors.

For purposes of this policy, a student who is academically ineligible will not be allowed to participate in their designated activity but may still attend after school study halls if they so desire.

Study Hall Teacher

Study Hall teachers will be responsible for maintaining accurate attendance records. On the last day of each week, the Study Hall teacher will send a list of those students who did not successfully meet the requirements of the Eligibility Procedure to the Assistant Principal. Students will be issued a detention to be served immediately, regardless of extracurricular commitment. Study Hall teachers are not responsible for providing work for students. They are expected to actively monitor the class and provide educational assistance and support when necessary. All appropriate accommodations (i.e. IEP/504, etc.) will be provided.

Fall Activities

Students who participate in fall sports will have their academic record reviewed before the school year begins. Students who failed two or more subjects in the 4th quarter will be placed on probation upon their return to school. Incoming 9th-grade students will have their academic records reviewed after the first five weeks of school.

Reinstatement

Every five-week marking period begins the process anew. Should previously identify students continue to have two or more failing grades, they will become Academically Ineligible (for purposes of this policy, failure is defined as having received a grade of F on a Report Card or Progress Report) for the next five weeks. Should previously identified students not have two or more failing grades, they can participate fully in their extracurricular activity. Students who continue to have failing grades for more than two five-week periods, although they have become ineligible, will still be able to participate in the after school study hall program.

Study Hall

Study Hall will take place after school from 3:00-3:55 pm on Monday through Thursdays. Students must bring their own assignments and materials with them to Study Hall. No student will be released (lockers, bathroom, etc.) while Study Hall is in session.
An after school bus is available for students at 4:00 pm each day. Once a student leaves Study Hall for the day they may join after school activities.

Absences

Excused absences, as defined in the student handbook, will result in a student attending after school Study Halls on a modified week schedule. A signed absent note must be provided to the Study Hall teacher on the day of the student’s return to school. Unexcused absences may result in a student not being able to complete the required amount of attendance and will result in a detention.
