Response to Intervention

Response to Intervention is an educational strategy that ensures that struggling and at-risk students’ strengths and needs are identified and addressed in a timely fashion. It consists of a three-tier system of response to students’ needs, with Tier 1 addressing the needs of all students through the core instructional program.

Students who are not progressing adequately in Tier 1 may be moved to a Tier 2 program, with a more intensive and targeted intervention begun to meet the student’s needs. A Tier 3 intervention may be used for students who do not progress adequately in Tier 2, and this consists of a more individualized intervention program to address specific deficits.

Throughout the RTI process, a commitment is made to address students’ needs through the use of high quality, research-based, systematic instructional strategies and to monitor students’ progress regularly. The RTI framework can be used to address both, the academic and behavioral needs of students.
